Help, I'm talking way too fast!

3 ways to speak more slowly

As a public speaking trainer, I have many clients who feel they speak far too quickly. They want to speak more slowly.

But what I often notice is that my clients' speaking pace is actually quite comfortable. The problem lies elsewhere…

Here are three ways to slow down your speech—and it goes far beyond simply speaking a little slower.

  1. Include less, but more important information

Many people cram far too much information into their presentations. You can't fit everything you want into a short speech. This stresses both you and your audience.

Include less, but more important information. This gives you more time and the feeling that you can and should speak more slowly.

  1. Have the courage to pause

Many make the same mistake and jump from one thought to the next, from one point to another, without pausing for a few seconds.

This speeds up the speaking pace. Furthermore, your listener can't grasp everything you're saying because you're not giving them enough time.

Use the sound of silence, for example, when transitioning from the first to the second point. This allows yourself and your audience more time to process what you've said.

  1. Speak more slowly when it's important

Many speakers fail to clearly emphasize the significance of their points. It's crucial to know which parts of the speech are important, as these should be emphasized more and delivered more slowly.

Conclusion

If you feel like you're speaking way too fast, keep these three key points in mind. These three strategies will significantly improve your speaking pace. You'll feel calmer, and it will help your audience better understand the message or content of your presentation.
